About Skylight Counseling Center

Transforming Challenges into New Beginnings

"The name Skylight Counseling Center comes from what a skylight is and represents—a new, unexpected opening that brings in more light."

Skylight Counseling Center was founded in 2011 by David Klow, Licensend Marriage and Family Therapist. Skylight is dedicated to the growth and development of individuals, couples and families. Combining traditional psychotherapy and modern forms of healing, Skylight helps hundreds of people annually to find deeper passion and meaning in their lives.

The idea of a skylight reflects how we think of therapy and our approach to care — creating space for insight, clarity, and growth, even when the work feels hard. Meaningful change doesn’t come from avoiding what’s difficult, but from meeting it with curiosity and compassion. Our clinicians do their own reflective work so they can support clients in navigating theirs, thoughtfully and without judgment. This philosophy guides how we show up with clients, with one another and in the communities we serve.

In additon to his marriage and family therapist license, David also extensively trained as an intuitive healer and spiritual guide in the lineage of the School of Spiritual Cycles as well as in the tradition of the Berkeley Psychic Institute. He works creatively and collaboratively, drawing on ancient wisdom and modern practices to bring lasting transformation to people's lives and the world. He is the author of You Are Not Crazy: Letters from Your Therapist, from Wyatt-MacKenzie Publishing, which helps normalize the process of therapy, as well as Inspiration For The Weary Therapist: A Practical Clinical Companion, from Routledge Press, which is a book for therapists.

Beyond the Skylight Counseling Center, David is also the founder of The Skylight Foundation, a nonprofit extension of Skylight Counseling Center which provides affordable mental health services for those in need, as well as Skylight Healing Center which focuses on alternative forms of healing.

Through Skylight, David has been bringing forth new modalities of treatment which are helping to take psychotherapy into its next era. He was a Clinical Lecturer through the Department of Psychology for Northwestern University’s Master of Science in Marital and Family Therapy Program at The Family Institute for over 10 years, as well as an Adjunct Faculty member at Adler University's Master in Couple and Family Therapy Program.

He received his Master of Science in Marital and Family Therapy from The Family Institute at Northwestern University along with extensive advanced training in The Family Institute Post-Graduate Clinical Fellowship. Today David runs Skylight, manages it's clinical team, and sees clients on a regular basis. He has a specialty in working with people who are highly sensitive, empathic, or intuitive, with executives and business owners, with high functioning couples, and with other therapists.

Diversity Statement

Committed to inclusivity

Social justice is an imperative value to our work here at Skylight Counseling Center. Though the therapists come from different personal and professional backgrounds, we are dedicated to cultural humility and cultural curiosity. We are committed to the inclusivity of all systematically excluded communities that we serve. We understand that inclusion, equity, and social justice is an ongoing endeavor, and we will continue to grow.

Our Commitment in Action:

  • Affinity Communities White Affinity Community
  • BIPOC Affinity Community
  • LGBTQIA+ Affinity Community
  • Community Partnerships with the city of Evanston, Year Up Chicago, Illinois Institute of Technology, & The Skylight Foundation

DEI Definitions:

  • Diversity: Diversity pertains to the range of differences that we all encompass. These differences are not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity/expression, sexual orientation, age, social class, physical ability, religious and spiritual values, political beliefs, culture, mental health, socioeconomic status, age, neurodiversity, and military/veteran status.
  • Equity: Equity refers to fair and just policies and practices that ensure all staff, clinicians, and clients can thrive. Equity is different from equality in that equality implies treating everyone exactly the same. Achieving equity means actively acknowledging and addressing structural inequalities that have systematically oppressed and excluded many minoritized groups of people.
  • Inclusion: Inclusion is the active practice of ensuring that people feel a sense of belonging. At Skylight counseling center we believe that inclusion has to be intentional, proactive, and ongoing. We believe that inclusion does not just come from leadership, but it comes from all levels within the organization.

Searching for the Color of Understanding

At our office in Evanston we are proud to have on display the work of Chicago artist Hector Duarte. His mural, titled Searching for the Color of Understanding, is a living expression of the work we do at Skylight. Please watch the video for more information!
